Under the supervision of Unit Leadership, the Unit Clerk performs clerical, communication, and receptionist duties that support daily operations of the Adult Medical Unit at Bronson Methodist Hospital.
This role helps coordinate communication between patients, visitors, nurses, and providers while ensuring accurate recordkeeping and smooth unit workflow. The Unit Clerk also assists with maintaining supplies, supporting patient flow, and creating a welcoming and organized environment for patients and families.
Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Required
High school diploma or GED (required for employees hired after June 1, 2017)
Preferred
1–3 months of related clerical or administrative experience
Previous healthcare experience
Working knowledge of medical terminology
Additional Requirements
Successful completion of hospital orientation, core orientation, and unit-specific training
Ability to meet organizational competency requirements for English, writing, spelling, and reading comprehension
Coordinate the flow of information throughout the unit
Answer telephones and nurse call systems and relay messages appropriately
Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and members of the healthcare team
Direct visitors to patient rooms and waiting areas
Assist in maintaining positive patient and visitor relations
Prepare and maintain patient records and files
Record patient admission information and assist with medical record preparation
Compile daily patient census and distribute information according to unit procedures
Gather, input, and retrieve information from hospital computer systems
Perform clerical duties to support unit operations
Coordinate with the charge nurse to ensure efficient patient flow
Assist with admission paperwork, including Medicare/Important Message documentation
Deliver materials and supplies to patient rooms as directed
Assist with monitoring the unit environment to support patient care
Monitor and request supplies designated by nursing staff
Organize and stock supplies according to unit procedures
Receive items from the pneumatic tube system and deliver medications or materials to nursing staff
Maintain access to medication rooms for stocking and retrieving supplies as needed
Distribute mail, flowers, and newspapers to patients
Assist patients and families with basic needs when appropriate (such as providing water or towels)
Transport patients and visitors within the facility as directed
In certain departments, the Unit Clerk may also function as a Patient Safety Assistant for suicide precautions.
Responsibilities include:
Observing and reporting patient behaviors and activities to ensure safety
Communicating patient status with the responsible RN
Assisting with patient positioning, transfers, and mobility when needed
Accompanying patients for diagnostic tests as required
Maintaining a clean and safe environment
