Position Summary

The System Lab Technical Manager provides leadership and technical oversight for laboratory services across the Bronson Healthcare system. This role requires advanced expertise in laboratory clinical practice, quality management, data analysis, and process improvement.

The manager collaborates with clinicians, laboratory staff, and system leaders to support high-quality laboratory testing, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include guiding laboratory methodology and instrumentation decisions, supporting clinical initiatives, managing budgets, and implementing solutions that improve service, quality, and cost effectiveness.

The System Lab Technical Manager serves as an active member of the Laboratory System Leadership Team.


Education & Experience

Candidates must meet CLIA requirements for high-complexity laboratory testing, including one of the following:

  • PhD in clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical, or biological science and at least 1 year of training or experience in high-complexity testing

OR

  • Master’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical, or biological science and at least 2 years of training or experience in high-complexity testing

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemical, physical, or biological science and at least 4 years of training or experience in high-complexity testing

Additional requirements:

  • 3–5 years of laboratory experience, including progressive technical leadership responsibilities

  • Experience with instrumentation maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, validation, and computer interfacing

  • ASCP or NCA certification as Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)

  • Participation in the ASCP certification maintenance program (or enrollment within one year of hire)


Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Leadership & Strategy

  • Participate in laboratory system leadership initiatives and strategic planning

  • Support the development and implementation of departmental goals aligned with organizational strategy

  • Promote Bronson’s Plan for Excellence standards throughout laboratory operations

  • Serve as a resource for clinicians and laboratory staff regarding testing methodologies and clinical laboratory practices

Technical Oversight & Laboratory Operations

  • Guide selection, implementation, and validation of laboratory tests, methodologies, and instrumentation

  • Identify and resolve technical issues related to laboratory test systems

  • Lead development of procedures and technical training for laboratory staff

  • Direct the development of protocols and test panels for clinical trials and research initiatives

Quality, Compliance & Regulatory Standards

  • Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory requirements

  • Support readiness for inspections, audits, and accreditation reviews

  • Monitor laboratory quality indicators and implement improvements as needed

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory quality and performance

Data Analysis & Process Improvement

  • Analyze laboratory data including linearity studies, analytical ranges, and quality control standards

  • Conduct root cause analyses and implement solution-based improvements

  • Identify opportunities to improve laboratory utilization, reduce costs, and increase operational efficiency

  • Support implementation of systems and processes that improve laboratory performance and outcomes

Financial & Operational Management

  • Develop and monitor the department’s annual budget

  • Analyze financial variances and benchmark performance

  • Implement operational or technological improvements to enhance productivity and cost containment

  • Monitor department performance against financial and clinical quality targets

Project Management & Collaboration

  • Manage laboratory projects and ensure timely completion of milestones

  • Collaborate with clinicians and external departments on laboratory-related initiatives

  • Participate in Bronson system committees and interdisciplinary initiatives


Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Expertise in laboratory instrumentation, testing methodologies, and validation processes

  • Knowledge of CLIA and CAP regulatory requirements

  • Advanced proficiency with laboratory information systems, data analysis tools, and database management

  • Strong communication and leadership skills

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail

  • Ability to drive innovation and process improvement


Physical Requirements

  • Work involves sustained concentration and detailed analytical work

  • Computer use may account for 40–70% of the workday

  • Position includes regular standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting of light objects
